Our Story
1998
As a civil engineer by training, Robert Gordon traveled to Martinsburg, West Virginia to establish a new transportation engineer position for his company. Robert would end up filling the position and begin a new adventure for him and his family.
In February of 1998 while attending Youth Congress in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Robert and Dianna Gordon felt the call to start a home missions church in Martinsburg to reach the growing city with the Gospel. With the support of their pastor, Robert H. Keenan, and the West Virginia District of the United Pentecostal Church they embarked upon their journey. On May 29, 1998, they loaded a 26-foot U-Haul with all their belongings and moved to Martinsburg.
June 1998
The Gordons started Tri-State United Pentecostal Church on June 14, 1998. The first church service was held in the living room of their home with five in attendance. They continued to hold church services in their home for a month, and then moved into a building owned by a Presbyterian church. The church would meet at the Presbyterian Church Hall for the next eight years.
2005
In 2005, the church purchased land and prepared to build a church building. However, due to building requirements and additional requirements for storm water management the cost quickly outpaced the available budget. The project was put on hold and the church continued to hold services in the Presbyterian Hall.
While Pastor Gordon was in India on a mission’s trip, another congregation expressed interest in the land the church had purchased. The church decided to sell the property and was able to make a considerable profit. Shortly thereafter, the congregation found a property at 198 Lee Street. It was a good location with a spacious lot. Pastor Gordon immediately called the realtor. The building was owned by a Ruritan Club.
The congregation went to see the building the following week and held a prayer meeting on the property believing that God would have His perfect will in this matter.
The church began negotiations with the realtor to purchase the facility. A vital concern was that other parties were interested in purchasing the property as well. The owners rejected all offers until they were informed that Tri-State United Pentecostal Church wanted to purchase the property to be used as a church. With this information, the sellers accepted the church’s offer.
October 2006
On October 22, 2006, Tri-State United Pentecostal Church was renamed to Landmark Apostolic Church and established at 198 Lee Street, Martinsburg, West Virginia. Since that time, the church has expanded its property by purchasing two adjacent properties which serve as a parsonage and Sunday school facility.
